As Design Director, I collaborated with the Allen Institute over a decade, shaping their visual identity to support their groundbreaking scientific mission. This work included developing the Allen Institute and Brain Atlas brands, refining their brand architecture, and creating various assets such as digital materials, tradeshow booths, ads, lobby graphics, and annual reports for five consecutive years. Founded by Paul Allen in 2003, the Allen Institute pioneers a collaborative approach to research, embracing Team Science, Big Science, and Open Science to accelerate discovery and share invaluable data with the global scientific community.

Designing the Allen Institute’s annual reports required transforming complex scientific content into engaging narratives. Drawing inspiration from striking macro photography—showcasing brain structures, nerve cells, and stem cells—we paired these visuals with clean layouts to balance beauty and clarity. Each report’s cover reflects the annual theme while emphasizing the Institute’s global impact.
